Why Do We Keep Searching?

In our Advent series, Wise Men Still Seek Him, Pastor Levi Matteson talks about how we keep searching because we are disoriented. God does not give us better directions — He gives us His light, and that light is Jesus.
1) We Are Searching Because We Are in the Dark (Isaiah 60:2; John 3:19),
2) God’s Light Comes Looking for Us (Isaiah 60:1; John 1:9),
3) The Magi Show How Seeking Becomes Finding (Matthew 2:1–12), and
4) Finding Jesus Produces Joy and Worship (Matthew 2:10–11).
This episode of the Evangel Houghton podcast is a Sunday message from Evangel Community Church, Houghton, Michigan, December 21, 2025.

Advent reminds us that the story of Christmas doesn’t begin with our search for God, but with God’s search for us. We often assume He must be distant, silent, hidden, or far from our everyday lives. Yet Scripture tells a different story: God is the One who seeks. He speaks to exiles, shows up in forgotten places like Nazareth, and draws near to ordinary people who never expected Him. In this Advent series, Wise Men Still Seek Him, we remember that our searching is never the starting point. God has already moved toward us. He wants to be found. And the invitation of this season is simple: open your heart to the God who has already come near.
