Who Do You Say I Am?

Who Do You Say I Am?

Who Christ Is and Why It Matters. When a child dies it is tragic. When a family dies in an auto accident — tragic. Any death that doesn't make sense, that is untimely or unfair — TRAGIC. But when a firefighter enters a burning building and throws a baby down to the safety of a net, but then he himself dies, it is not tragic — it's heroic. If Jesus were a mere man, his death would have been tragic. His death only makes sense in light of his substance. Jesus's words and deeds point his deity. He did not specifically say the words "I am God," but his words left no doubt in the mind of his audience of his claims to be just that. Todd Neva reviews the ministry and early miracles of Jesus Christ that led to this question he asked his disciples, "Who do you say I am." Though the answer to that question is now clear, given our ability to open a Bible, much heresy rose in the early church. The church addressed this heresy with the three C's — Catholic, Creed, and Canon. The Scripture for today's sermon is Matthew 16:13-20. This is a podcast of Evangel Church, Houghton, Michigan, on September 4, 2016.
